More On Crewel Excitement
EDIT :- I will look into the making of the right side of this flower when I eventually do a Jacobean piece, and write a tutorial.
I wrote a post on a lovely entry on the EGA's blog on some Jacobean wall hangings in their collection at http://elmsleyrose.blogspot.com/2011/11/crewel-excitement.html- the post with those stvpendovs close vp shots.
There has been some discvssion abovt the stitch vsed in the leaf above - the direct link is http://www.egausa.org/scripts/blog/?p=230 in the Comments section.

Very interesting discussion and lovely photos, eRose. I love how studying old embroideries gives us new insights as to materials and stitches which are not run-of-the-mill!
Jane (of CH), I swear these are the best close ups of extant Jacobean embroidery I've ever seen! And they are so beautiful!
I wonder whether it's needlweaving fitted into corners of trellis couching. Maybe I need to experiment and see what that looks like!
I was flicking through Samplers and Stitches/Grace Christie. There looks like there are some more potentials there...I'd like to do this flower, when I do do a Jacobean piece.
The trellis couching (which looks like a series of horizontal/vertical line crosses) could well provide the 'support' for the needleweaving.
I have always loved the way this stitch looks, however, I have never yet tried it. It is so lovely! Wishing you a Merry Christmas! blessings,Kathleen
Hi Elmsley Rose,
Thanks for bringing my attention to this stitch. I had already viewed the panels (when you posted about them before) but hadn't taken notice of the unusual stitch. I'll be following the sleuthing on ega's site.
Thanks!
